Experts of the Center Conducted Field Monitoring in the Atyrau Region

From 7 to 15 February 2026, an expert group of the International Center for Interfaith and Interreligious Dialogue conducted a series of field research in the Atyrau Region. The working visit to the western region was carried out by Director of the Department of Analysis and Monitoring of the Religious Situation Zaure Malgarayeva and Senior Expert Zamira Abisheva.

The purpose of the visit was to conduct a comprehensive study of the religious situation in the region, identify risks related to the spread of destructive religious movements, monitor current challenges in interfaith relations, and develop practical recommendations for state and public institutions.

During the visit, meetings and expert consultations were held with leadership and specialists of relevant regional structures, including the Department for Religious Affairs of the Atyrau Region, the Information and Analytical Center, the Shapagat Center for Assistance to Victims of Destructive Religious Movements, Zhardem – Atyrau, and the Information, Educational and Rehabilitation Center “AQNIET”.

Special attention was also paid to dialogue with the clergy of Christian churches and imams of local mosques. Discussions focused on the prevention of religious extremism, improving the religious literacy of the population, and strengthening mechanisms of interfaith cooperation.

As part of the mission, field monitoring of the religious situation was also conducted in the Kurmangazy District and the city of Kulsary, including working meetings with representatives of internal policy departments, religious leaders, theologians, and religious studies experts. Key issues discussed included current challenges in religious security, approaches to working with youth, and information and outreach activities in rural and urban settlements.

Following the visit, a comprehensive analysis of the current religious situation in the region was conducted, potential risks and vulnerable areas of preventive work were identified, proposals were developed to strengthen coordination between government bodies and civil society institutions, and further areas of expert support for the region were outlined. The collected materials will be systematized and used in the preparation of analytical recommendations aimed at strengthening interfaith harmony and ensuring religious stability in Kazakhstan.
